These sessions have a typical structure that helps facilitate a mind-body connection for patients, providing the best opportunity for healing. The session starts with a short “interview” or discussion about what is coming up in the patient’s life. It could be a physical or health-related problem, it could be interpersonal conflict, distorted emotional patterns, or simply a desire to connect deeply with the body. Depending on practitioner recommendations and patient preferences, a short acupuncture session may be helpful to open up the energy channels in the body, and invite body and breath awareness. After the acupuncture needles are taken out, the patient is asked to either lay down or sit cross-legged (fully clothed) on the massage table and the bodywork begins. The practitioner starts working in the abdomen to connect the patient to their breath and allow physical and energetic blockages to open up. The practitioner uses music, rhythms, singing and breathing to facilitate energy movement and remove blocks. At the end of the treatment, the practitioner asks about the patient’s experience and provides any insight, feedback, or suggestions to facilitate integration of the experience.
