Acupressure and reflexology are styles of bodywork that use hands or tools to press or rub specific points on the body, to relieve pain and harmonize body systems. Reflexology uses primarily the feet and hands to treat the entire body, using a map that corresponds to the entire body to specific regions on the extremities. It is typically performed clothed, while the client relaxes on a massage table or chair. It was developed in the early 20th Century, based on much older ideas of correspondences within and throughout the body. Acupressure commonly uses the same sets of points and meridians as acupuncture but treats them with finger pressure rather than needles. Both systems are well tolerated by people of all ages. Acupressure is a good modality for children and people who wish the benefits of acupuncture without the use of needles.
