Personal Message

I was personally drawn to the fields of Naturopathic and Chinese Medicines following a diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. At the time, I was living in New York City where I had never even heard of a Naturopath. Despite my appreciation for conventional medicine, I was left with no options after all available treatments failed to offer relief.  I refused to accept that there was nothing to be done and took it upon myself to learn how to heal.  Around the same time, the health of my closest friend rapidly declined as she learned she was suffering from Lyme disease.  She developed a severe case that, after a surgery, precipitated a rare pain disorder known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS/RSD).  She went from doctor to doctor, searching arduously for one with the tools to help offer her relief.  After seeing this, I was drawn to ensure that my practice of medicine would be well informed for helping people like her.

Bio

Dr. Michael McKee is a licensed Naturopathic Physician and Acupuncturist who completed 6 years of medical education at National University of Natural Medicine.  His focus is on complex chronic illnesses including Lyme disease, gastrointestinal disorders, endocrine imbalances, chronic pain, and cancer care.  Dr. McKee has attended the ILADS conferences (International Lyme and Associated Disease Society) and is a Lyme-literate doctor.  Dr. McKee spent his first year in practice mentoring with Dr. Loren Lubin at Kwan Yin to further his offerings for patients with unique health challenges. He also has experience collaborating as a team with Medical Oncologists within a hospital system to provide evidence-informed supportive care to cancer patients. He is a member of the Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians.

Dr. McKee practices an eclectic style of acupuncture and has a major focus on herbal medicine.  He practices a blend of Western Anthroposophic herbal medicine and Classical Chinese herbalism. He is trained in an ancient lineage of Chinese herbalism that uses abdominal palpation techniques to identify indications for specific herbs using the sense of touch.  Dr. McKee’s approach to herbalism supports greater harmony between the body’s organs as well as the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems in order to help the patient’s own body alter the course of disease.

Prior to entering the field of medicine, Dr. McKee studied Chemical Engineering at Rutgers University, received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Photography from School of Visual Arts, exhibited internationally as a fine artist, and worked in the textile industry where he ran a design business.  Dr. McKee’s diverse path informs his practice of medicine, in which he helps patients from an integrated perspective of logic guided by insight.

“As for medicine, it means ‘listening with the heart.’ Somebody who is skilled at listening with the heart thus makes an excellent physician.” – Sun Simiao (7th Century) from Appended Formulas Worth a Thousand in Gold (trans Sabine Wilms)
