Cupping is a traditional Asian technique that uses glass or silicon suction cups to increase circulation or release adhesions in muscles, to relieve pain and promote health. It is often used in conjunction with acupuncture or massage. Cups may be placed in a particular position, or may be moved across the skin. This technique is notable for the round marks sometimes seen following treatment, which may appear like painless pinkish or tan bruises, an effect known as “sha” that indicates that congestion has been released from deeper tissues.
